Garage Doors for Narrow Driveways
08/12/2013 Back To BlogIf your garage has a narrow driveway or if it directly opens into the public street, you need to choose a suitable garage door. This means that swing hung doors are not advisable. Anything that requires a lot of space to open is not a good option. The following types of garage doors are known to be space-savers and are great for narrow spaces.
Roll Up Door
Roll up garage doors are great for those that don't have a lot of space in the front area. They are usually made of strips of aluminum that roll around a barrel at the top portion of the door to open. It is the same type of door used in securing stores in malls or markets. The door can be opened manually or electric door openers may be installed to operate the door remotely. One disadvantage of roll up doors, however, is the aluminum frame and panel typically used with it. Aluminum is not a good temperature insulator. As such, additional insulation may be needed to prevent severely cold or excessively hot external temperatures from penetrating into the garage and causing problems.
Overhead Slide Door
This garage door is similar to roll-up types but instead of rolling the garage door panel, it is being slid up and down through a structure connected to the garage ceiling. In this setup, the door is being pulled inside instead of being pushed outside and requiring space in the garage front to be opened. This type of door also enables the use of different types of panels. It is possible to replace the garage door panel with something more isolated like wood or fiberglass.
Sliding Door
A sliding door is also a great space-saving option. It features a door panel that folds several times to open, as the folded panel is pressed into the sides of the door. This type of door has a panel that is usually made of wood, steel, or aluminum. Having a glass panel may not be an option because of the folding mechanism that is bound to easily break the glass.
